If you want to take a break from Facebook don't delete your account permanently as there is now way you can reverse this process rather, deactivate Facebook account temporarily so that when you are back from the break, you can resume from where you stopped.
If too many notification is what is distracting you, then turn them off and choose what notification you wish to be notified.
Facebook is a nice place to have quality time if you know your way around some basic Facebook settings. Such settings like privacy setting which allows you to set your profile activities to public, private or to specific Facebook friends.
